Self-study or Svadhyaya is a key component of Kriya Yoga, the only type of yoga that Patanjali mentions in his Yoga Sutras. A kriya is a conscious, volitional, engaged, spiritual action. We begin in a seated position, or Dandasana (sitting with legs extended forward). As we age, very often balance can become a challenge. In order to keep it, we have to keep practicing it however. Warrior 3 and tree pose can improve strength of the real core of the body (outer thighs and lower most buttocks) This series ends in Tadasana or mountain pose which is still a balance. We are after all trying to function on a planet that is moving and hurtling through space. If we are focused however and watch the mind, we can recognize that life is based on reciprocity. Some muscles work and then relax and let other muscles take over the work. It is subtle but nonetheless can become a kriya. What is the right action in any given moment on or off the mat?
