This class encompasses the morning session of my July 2019 Self-Care Saturday mini-retreat in the mountains of southern Vermont. We explored the ideas of surrender and release--getting rid of things that might be weighing us down and limiting our beliefs in ourselves--as we took in stunning scenery. Class begins with a few mindfulness practices--a mantra for Ganesh, some breathwork, and a special mudra to set the stage. That's followed by an accessible, slow vinyasa, and several yin postures. The session encompasses some targeted movement to help get rid of physical tension (including nerve gliding), as well as a mindful flow ... and even a few moments of "tantrumasana"--a vocal, foot-stomping release worthy of any cranky toddler! We use a variety of props--blocks, bolsters and blankets--as well as a stretchy fabric strip during our mindfulness practice to help with breath awareness. You might like to use a scarf or belt that has a bit of give. Don't worry if you don't have something to use--just putting your focused awareness in the area near the bottom of your ribs will achieve the same result. We were on a tight schedule so the savasana for this session is much shorter than I would have preferred. Feel free to extend it to meet your needs and timeframe. You might choose to join us aromatically by diffusing an essential oil (or two) that helps get rid of anxiety. My own Maitri blend turns "generous compassion" toward ourselves with the scents of sandalwood, ylang-ylang, patchouli, frankincense, clary sage, coriander and vetiver.
